Reusable Bags

It's no secret disposable shopping bags cause unsightly litter in our communities and on the land.  Disposable shopping bags take a long time to break down and use a lot of natural resources and energy for manufacturing and shipping to northern communities.  They also take up space in our landfills.

NWT communities, businesses and residents have already been taking steps to reduce the use of disposable shopping bags and ENR encourages people to switch to reusable bags.  In April and May 2009 ENR gave away two free reusable bags per household to all NWT communities.

Remember to take reusable bags with you when you go shopping. You may forget once in a while but soon using reusable bags will become a habit. Keep a few reusable bags in your vehicle. Tuck one away in your purse or backpack.

The best part about reusable bags is they’re way stronger than their disposable cousins! Your purchases won’t tear through the bag and drop to the ground.

The question shouldn’t be “paper or plastic?”  It should be “did you bring your reusable bags?”

Keep your community clean.  Switch to reusable bags.
